Tribute to Alan Dawson, who I had the good fortune of studying with in the late 80's. I'm trying to practice again, so my playing doesn't shrivel up and die. This is his solo on "There Will Never Be Another You" with Sonny Rollins Trio in 1965 - 22 years before I met him. Alan was like a pro athlete. He stayed in shape on the instrument more than anyone I ever came across. I hate to play these solos like a classical piece. The main thing for me is to get in shape, and get inside Alan's head to explore some new ways of thinking. This is the original tempo. Alan was a one of a kind musician. Along with others, I'm just trying to help keep his legacy alive. Hit me up for lessons if you would like to learn his method, or any other style.

In this version I slowed the video down to 60% of the original tempo, and played along with the solo at that tempo. This way people can get a better chance to catch the stickings, and also appreciate all of the motion in between the notes being played.
Frankie Dunlop Drum Solo on "Evidence" SLOWED DOWN - DRUM COVER
This is one of my favorite solos. I finally, after about 35 years, sat down and tried to pick it apart. I tried to get Frankie's motion and stickings as best I could. There are some other transcriptions on YouTube, but they didn't seem totally correct to me. Let me know what you think.
